GST registration: the $75,000 threshold explained
How GST turnover works, when registration is generally required, and what to check before you register.
Most businesses need to register for GST when their GST turnover reaches $75,000. The threshold is generally $150,000 for not-for-profit organisations. Some activities, including taxi and ride-sourcing services, have different rules.
GST turnover is not simply the balance in your bank account. It is based on the value of relevant supplies, excluding GST, and is assessed using both current and projected turnover tests.
If you are required to register, the ATO generally expects you to do so within 21 days of becoming required. Registration affects the way you price, invoice and report your sales, and it may let you claim credits for GST paid on eligible business purchases.
Voluntary registration can suit some businesses, but it also brings record-keeping and reporting obligations. Check your circumstances and the current ATO guidance before making the change.
